Doctorate Obligatory?
Do I need a doctorate to apply for a professorship?
According to § 36 Abs. 1 Nr. 3 Hochschulgesetz NRW (University Act of North Rhine-Westfalia) proof of a particular qualification for independent academic work must be provided. Evidence of this can generally be provided through a doctoral degree with good or very good result.
Should you wish to apply for an assistant professorship (W1), you will not need to have completed your doctoral studies at the time of your application. However, it will be mandatory prior to taking up your position.
